Obituary
Elizabeth Fern Choate, age 91, of El Dorado Springs, Missouri, passed away on Saturday, September 14, 2013, at Community Springs Healthcare Facility in El Dorado Springs, Missouri. She was born north of Filley, Missouri, on December 21, 1921, to Henry Scott Fortney and Bessie Ellen (Messick) Fortney. She was the seventh of eight children. Fern was a member of the El Dorado Springs Church of Christ.

In September 1937, Fern married John Marion Gundy. To this union two children were born: John Henry Gundy, who died at birth, and John Woodrow Gundy.

Fern and a sister lived a number of years in California, where she worked for several companies, including Knott’s Berry Farm. While in California, she met and married Eli Choate on October 31, 1965. After Eli retired from the Navy, they moved back to Missouri, where they lived the remainder of their lives.

Fern was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Bessie Fortney; her husband, Eli Choate; her sons: John Henry Gundy and John Woodrow Gundy; brothers: Glenn, Ray, and Carl Fortney; and sisters: Murrel Headley and Erma Garrett.

Survivors include sisters: Helen Bishop, of El Dorado Springs, Missouri, and Betty Kelly, and husband Harold, of Wichita Kansas; grandchildren: Kim Kelley of Carl Junction, Missouri, and Jason Gundy, of Nixa, Missouri; great-grandchildren: Darrian and Deardin Kelley, of Carl Junction, Missouri; and numerous nephews and nieces.

Funeral services for Elizabeth Fern Choate were held Monday, September 16, 2013, at 1:00 p.m. at Bland-Hackleman Funeral Home with David Studer officiating. Musical selections were “I’ll Fly Away” and “When We All Get to Heaven.” Interment followed at the El Dorado Springs City Cemetery under the direction of Bland-Hackleman Funeral Home.

Pallbearers were: Kent Fortney, Tate Thoreson, Ken Fortney, Mike Gurley, Drew Moran, and Bill Bishop.
