In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hazel Dell Missionary Baptist Church and left at the funeral home.
Rachel Leona (Hertzberg) Benham, age 92, went to her Heavenly Home on December 20, 2013. She was born June 6, 1921 on a farm south of El Dorado Springs to Henry D. & Laura (Hornbeck) Hertzberg.
Rachel was married to Earl Myron Benham on October 21, 1941. To this union two daughters were born, Rachel Louise Lasley and Rosalyn Kay Chambers. She was saved in September, 1939, at the home of Bro. Dude Pace after seeking for eight years. She and Earl made serving the Lord their life and traveled many miles to attend revival meetings. At her passing, she was a member of Hazel Dell Missionary Baptist Church.
Rachel was a homemaker. She and Earl lived on the family farm. A year after he passed away, she moved to town and loved living there because someone was always dropping by to visit. She made quilts and gave each child, grandchild, and great grandchild along with other relatives and friends a quilt that she had stitched by hand with love. Even when her hands were misshapen with arthritis, she still tried to quilt. She also wrote poetry. She would wake up in the night with a poem on her mind and had to go write it down then or it would be gone by morning. She decided to share her poetry with others a few years ago so she had a book printed of some of her poems. She wouldn’t let anyone buy it but gave the book freely to others in hopes that someone might turn to God after reading one of the poems.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl, in January, 1993; her parents; her twin sister, Ruth Bausch; her other siblings, Lawrence Hertzberg, Herman Hertzberg, Floyd Hertzberg, Robert Hertzberg, Cecil Hertzberg, and Viola Hazelwood; her granddaughter, Christi Sutton; and a step great great granddaughter, Baby Stephens.
She is survived by her daughters, Louise Lasley; Rosalyn Chambers and husband, Jerry; grandchildren, Will Sutton, Michael Lasley and Kim, David Collins, Alan Collins and Becky; her step grandchildren, Suzanne Mears and Ron; Gerald Chambers and Jennifer; her great grandchildren, Heath, Jared, and Emily Sutton; Michaela, Courtney, Lane, Lindsey , Justin, and Melissa Lasley; Michaela and Kade Collins; Colton, Clayton, & Alexis Collins; her step great grandchildren, Seth Sutton, Mandi Stephens and Joel, Kelsey and Madeline Mangner, Trenton and Chloe Mears, Ian Chambers, Garrett Yaryan, Jaliko and Jalela Graubner; three step great great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and a host of other family and friends.
