Obituary
Betty L. (Gresham) Gilbert, age 86, of El Dorado Springs, Missouri, passed away Saturday, June 7, 2014, at the Community Springs Nursing Home, after a short battle with lung cancer. She was born June 28, 1927, near Roscoe, MO, to Carl & Goldie (Rickman) Gresham.

Betty married Durl F. Gilbert in Fort Scott, KS, on June 29, 1945. To this union four children were born: Donis, Dennis, Janice and Douglas. Betty was employed with the International Shoe Factory for a short period of time. Factory work didnít prove to work out for her very well as she only wanted to spend her time raising and being there for her children. She began to babysit in 1957 so she could be home with her children and also earn some extra money. She continued babysitting until she was 60 years of age, only then to care for her grandchildren.

Mom would get up early, butcher, clean, and fry a chicken so her children could take chicken to school for their lunch. When they would get home, there would always be their favorite snacks waiting for them, such as homemade donuts, homemade candy, and pudding. Her family will always remember her homemade noodles and they were the highlight of Christmas and Thanksgiving get togethers.

Betty came to know the Lord in 1951 during a revival meeting. She spent the remainder of her life serving God and instilling Godly principles in her childrenís lives. Her Godly life was a living testimony to those who knew her and a legacy to her children and her entire family.

Betty enjoyed writing and has left behind many journals she had written throughout her life. She also completed a handwritten autobiography of her life, including many family pictures, in 2005, and a handwritten Book of Memories in 2008. These writings will be cherished by her children for the remainder of their lives. She also enjoyed making pillows and quilts which will also be cherished by her children and grandchildren.

Preceding Betty in death were her husband, Durl; her parents; daughter, Donis Banks; and two sisters, Mariam Culbertson and Leliah Hinkle. She is survived by her children: Dennis Gilbert and wife Sherry, Jan Bland and husband Randy, and Doug Gilbert and wife Carla; and son-in-law Steve Banks, all of El Dorado Springs. She is also survived by eight grandchildren: Karen Sibley and husband Kirk, Michael Banks and wife Gina, Chris Gilbert, Shelley Johnson and husband Chuck, Nick Bland and wife Courtney, Ashley Miller and husband Matt, Chance McConnaughey and Grant McConnaughey; fifteen great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Winnie Burrow; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for Betty Gilbert were held on Tuesday, June 10, 2014, at the El Dorado Springs Church of God (Holiness) with Rev. Joe Trussell and Rev. Silas McGehee officiating. Joe and Faith Trussell provided music. Burial followed in Clintonville Cemetery under the direction of Bland-Hackleman Funeral Home.

Pallbearers were: Chris Gilbert, Mike Banks, Kirk Sibley, Nick Bland, Chuck Johnson, Matt Miller, and Grant McConnaughey.
